Podiatrists help with issues that affect your feet and lower legs. They can also treat ongoing health problems such as diabetes and injuries. They are sometimes called podiatric practitioners or podiatric medicine doctors. While podiatrists can be considered doctors, they don’t attend medical school. They also have their own private schools as well as professional associations. Their name is "DPM", which stands for doctor of podiatric medicine science, as opposed to MD (medical doctor).
Podiatrists have the ability to perform surgeries, repair broken bones, prescribe medications, and order lab tests or Xrays. If you have a problem with your feet or legs they will often collaborate with other experts. U.S. podiatrists have to be licensed and regulated by their states. To become podiatrists, students must take biology, chemistry, physics and other science courses in college.
The majority of students get a bachelor's in biology or a related field of science. They then go on to attend four years of podiatry school. They study how bones, muscles, nerves, or nerves interact to aid in movement. They will also look at foot injuries and illnesses. These include how to diagnose and treat the problem, as well as how to repair the feet by surgery if necessary.
